Some nests are easy to get to:
some are less so ...
& others are quite difficult...
We measure the depth to the top egg:
& to the bottom to get the egg-chamber diameter
We count the eggs:
Release any live baby turtles that are still in the nest ...
& then examine any unhatched eggs or dead embryos:
Overall hatching success is high ~ about 95%
At Palmerston Atoll during the Rufford Trust Expedition (April 2012): almost 9000 eggs were examined and only 429 failed to hatch.
